The Public Defender’s Office represents individuals charged with criminal and major traffic cases in Greene County, in which a sentence of imprisonment is a possibility. In order to qualify for the services of the Public Defender, the individual must show that he or she cannot afford to hire counsel on his or her own. Some persons may be required to reimburse the County up to $500.00 for the services of the Public Defender. This determination varies from case to case, based on each person’s circumstances. The Public Defender may also be appointed to represent parties involved in Juvenile Court Act proceedings.
The Public Defender’s Office is limited to representing individuals in the types of cases listed above. We cannot give you legal advice or represent you in family or other civil matters. You must seek private counsel for those types of cases.
If the Public Defender’s Office is appointed to your case, it is your responsibility to maintain contact with us.
